About the Author

Daniel Chirot is Job and Gertrud Tamaki Professor of International Studies at the University of Washington, Seattle. His books have been about genocide, ethnic conflicts, tyranny, social change, and Eastern Europe. He has consulted for NGOs, most recently for CARE in Africa. He has received a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship and a Senior Fellowship at the United States Institute of Peace.

About the Author
Kari Dunn Buron taught in K-12 with students on the autism spectrum for 30+ years. She developed an Autism Spectrum Disorders Certificate program for educators at Hamline University in St. Paul, MN and has done volunteer work specific to autism in Trinidad, Tobago, Barbados, Tanzania and Ghana. In 2003, Kari received a Self-designed Bush Leadership Fellowship that allowed her to spend a year interviewing and working internationally with a number of scientists and researchers in the area of Social Cognition, Education and Autism with a focus on challenging behaviors. Kari is the co-author of The Incredible 5-Point Scale, and the author of When My Worries Get Too Big, A 5 Could Make Me Lose Control and A 5 is Against the Law! (2008 ASA literary award winner). Kari is the co-editor of a textbook for educators titled Learners on the Autism Spectrum: Preparing Highly Qualified Educators (2009 ASA literary award winner) and is the creator of an original social skills magazine designed for students with Asperger Syndrome called The Social Times (2010 Gold Winner, National Parenting Publications Award and Gold Medal Winner Moonbeam Children s Book Awards). Mitzi Beth Curtis, MsEd, is an autism resource specialist currently working for Intermediate School District 287 in Minnesota and is consulting with Minnesota Life College. She has worked in special education, supported employment and residential programs for individuals with disabilities since 1978. Her youngest sister, Maria, sent her on this journey with her birth in 1963.

Disappointed

I bought this because it advertised free blank scales. There are none in the book, and there was no CD included with my book. There are none available for free online, and I don't feel like paying a download fee for a scale when that was the reason I purchased this book. I'm frustrated. Like a good 3 on the 5 point scale.

Great tool to use as a therapist

Great tool to use as a therapist. The book presents many different ways to use the 5-point scale: for a child who is aggressive, anxious, etc. My favorite use of the tool is to use a 5-point scale for kids to identify their behaviors at each level 1-5 (e.g., 5 = out of control; hitting, kicking, biting, spitting); next column is for "What I can do" and the final column is for the parent to work out their strategies ("What my mom/dad can do").

About the Author

Raoul-Gabriel Urma has worked as a software engineer for Oracle's Java Platform Group, Google's Python team, Ebay, and Goldman Sachs as well as for several startup projects. He's currently completing a PhD in Computer Science at the University of Cambridge and is a regular speaker and instructor.

Mario Fusco is a senior software engineer at Red Hat working on Drools, the JBoss rule engine. He created the open source library lambdaj, an internal Java DSL for manipulating collections in a functional way.

Alan Mycroft is Professor of Computer Science at the University of Cambridge, where he researches programming languages, their semantics, optimization and implementation. He is a co-founder and Trustee of the Raspberry Pi Foundation.

This is a concise and well-written introduction to Java 8

This is a concise and well-written introduction to Java 8.

With a bevy of new features, Java 8 represents a sea change in how the language has started to move in the direction of functional programming (likely as a result of the competitive pressures exerted by other JVM languages such as Scala), and this book offers an interesting take on all of that, from soup to nuts.

Here are some of the things I liked:

Pro's

* There are numerous quizzes that are generously sprinkled and interspersed throughout the text, which immediately follow the discussion of a given topic and help bolster your understanding of what you just read
* Clear and concise explanations of the new features in Java 8, often with a good dose of background and context which help explain and illuminate the motivating concerns of the language designers for introducing such changes
* Plenty of examples to help you sort out all the new features
* Brief introduction and primer on functional programming and techniques (Chapters 13 and 14), as well as a comparison of Scala and Java, and the blending of OOP with the functional paradigm (Chapter 15). Given the new direction which we're now evolving with the release of Java 8, these are useful things to have in this edition
* And with the bold statement of intent broadcast so clearly with the advent of Java 8, there is a brief look ahead at what will likely be in store for Java 9 and 10 in the near future

Con's

* The book assumes more than just a passing familiarity with Java, and to really appreciate the true extent and degree of recent developments, you need to have worked with several earlier versions of Java (e.g., starting with the introduction of the new for-each loop in Java 5, the tentative foray into parallelism with the introduction of the fork/join framework in Java 7, for instance), and a wary respect for the perennial NullPointerException since time immemorial in order to appreciate what Java 8 is now doing with the belated introduction of something like Optional as a better and more sane alternative to null, and perhaps finally put the last nail in the coffin of Hoare's "billion-dollar mistake."

* The section in Chapter 8 on refactoring and retrofitting existing legacy Java code base with the new features of Java 8 is a bit too short, for my taste, for such an important topic. Refactoring and retrofitting existing code base is a broad church. That said, it does reference other external sources for more info

One other point, which really doesn't qualify as a con, but would be relevant to anyone reading the Kindle edition, and so I'll mention it here anyway, is that in many of the code snippets in the MOBI format, the dash in the arrow token (for the new lambda syntax) is often rendered inadvertently as the line continuation operator, i.e., the dash of the arrow token appears at the end of the line, and then the greater-than symbol of the arrow token appears at the start of the next line, so that the arrow token of the new lambda syntax ends up getting split in two and hyphenated in the wrong place, which makes you do a double-take, as you try to parse the code with a line-continuation character, before you then realize it's really just the arrow token of the new lambda syntax.

This happens enough in the Kindle edition that it's worth a brief note here. But once you realize that's what's going on, it becomes a non-issue (and even a bit quaint, actually).

I also found the following comparison between Streams and Collections to be particularly useful:

"For readers who like philosophical viewpoints, you can see a stream as a set of values spread out in time. In contrast, a collection is a set of values spread out in space (here, computer memory), which all exist at a single point in time - and which you access using an iterator to access members inside a for-each loop."

That's a very nice, succinct way of putting it, and there are many other nuggets like that to be found in the text.

In sum, I would recommend this book to software developers, enterprise architects, and anyone else curious about the new evolutionary path which Java is now breaking, where the introduction of functional programming features plays a central role, but is by means not the only hint that the language designers are dropping to clue us in that many new and exciting changes are now afoot.

Java 8 - a game changer

This is a much needed book for anyone eager to get started with Java 8. Make no mistake, version 8 is a significant evolution of the language and it will change how many developers write their applications!

With that in mind, I’m pleased to say that all the main areas are covered. By these I mean lambdas, single abstract method interfaces, stream processing and default methods. But there’s more on offer here with chapters dedicated to refactoring, testing and the revised Date Time API (to name a few).

The authors haven’t just covered the feature changes though. As some programmers coming from previous versions of Java might not be entirely familiar with the functional programming paradigm, there is a substantial section of the book that will serve as a thorough introduction. There are also plenty of useful nuggets of information scattered throughout the text that will generally make you a better programmer.

So in summary, this is a great companion to get you started on your Java 8 and functional programming journey – so take the plunge, what are you waiting for?

The real Java 8 Features,explained!!

This book is awesome like the Java 8 feature. Loved the book to the core, here are the reasons for it:

1. Book starts with how to pass function in Java older versions and slowly build up on the talk ending up saying only thing we can do about this in older version is to apply strategy pattern, with the help of anonymous class
2. Then author shows how Java 8 itself, made it easy to pass the function without creation of anonymous class, which means without creation of Objects! Arguing how Java 8 made functions as first class citizens.
3. Then it clearly explains, whats the difference between Stream and collection, as its really important to understand.
4. All chapter have sidebar quiz, which is exciting to solve :)
5. Book also does the great job of explaining how we can create our own collectors, with Fork/Join framework.
6. Since lambdas are new to our toolkit, author show cases how they can help us in creating design patterns. Along with the topic of how to debug lambdas if things goes wrong.
7. Thinking functional way lesson, gives rock solid example for thinking in terms of functional programming. Author creates a LazyList to show, how functions can be stored and evaluated lazily when called!
8. At the end of the book, they made a comparison of Java 8 with Scala. How to do features like Pattern matching (in Scala) in Java 8 are covered here.

The book end's with what all changes can Java take and how it can be changed, shows clearly where does Java stands today.

One of the best thing about the book is the appendix. Appendix shows:

1. What all minor changes made to the Java 8
2. What all library got changed in Java 8
3. The last appendix explains about how lambdas is implemented internally, which does make the book outstanding.

Overall a great book for Java developers to get started with Java 8!!!

Though none are especially memorable, Christopher's declamations do provide a sober record of substantive changes in post^-cold war foreign affairs. If not as colorful as the memoirs of Kissinger, or as gossipy as those of Baker, the headnotes to Christopher's speeches reflect the author's hallmark of polite, analytic emollience when he recollects China's political truculence and commercial pirating, Bosnia's destruction, the Israeli/Palestinian negotiations, repeated Iraqi fire drills, or the atom bomb's proliferation. Good content - different style

The content of In the Stream of History is excellent - but one may find the style of the book awkward. It is based on speeches given by Warren Christopher - so the speeches (as they were given) and insight into their preparations are given - which is an excellent contribution to foreign policy practices, but makes for a difficult read. Reading a speech and hearing a speech at the moment of their importance are obviously two different things.

Jetzt richtete sich die Gewalt des Regimes nicht mehr nur gegen die Feinde im Ausland oder die gegen die Menschen, die außerhalb der „nationalsozialistischen Volksgemeinschaft“ standen, so zum Beispiel Juden, Regimegegner, Kommunisten usw. Mit den unaufhaltsam vorrückenden alliierten Truppen kehrte die Gewalt auf deutsches Reichsgebiet und zum deutschen Volk zurück, weil die Führung versuchte, die in der Wehrmacht und in der Bevölkerung grassierende Kriegsmüdigkeit und den gefürchteten Zusammenbruch der „Heimatfront“ durch immer schärfere Durchhaltebefehle und einen unvergleichlichen Durchhalteterror entgegenzuwirken.
Ein Instrument dieses Terrors waren die Standgerichte. Hierbei handelte es sich um Ausnahmegerichte, die sehr schnell Urteile fällen und vollstrecken konnten. Zwar waren sie schon seit dem Kaiserreich im deutschen Militärstrafrecht integriert, regelten damals aber nur geringfügige Tatbestände der niederen Gerichtsbarkeit. Das änderte sich mit Beginn des Zweiten Weltkrieges und vor allem in dessen Endphase, als die Standgerichte sich gegen Leute richteten, die nicht mehr bereit waren, den letzten Befehlen des untergehenden Dritten Reiches freiwillig und aus Überzeugung zu folgen, und in wenigen Stunden manchmal auch nur in Minuten über deren Leben oder Tod entschieden.
Dass dieses Terrorinstrument nicht einfach so vom Himmel gefallen waren, sondern nur ein Glied in einer Kette immer radikaler werdender Strafmaßnahmen zur Widerstandbekämpfung und Loyalitätserzwingung gewesen ist und durchaus nicht die letzte Stufe des Terrors und der Willkür darstellte, soll im ersten Kapitel gezeigt werden.
Da das Hauptziel der Standgerichtsbarkeit die Bekämpfung von Defätismus und Kriegsmüdigkeit war, sollen im zweiten Kapitel die Ursachen für diese Phänomene untersucht werden.
Im Hauptteil der Arbeit werden militärische und zivile Standgerichte genauer analysiert. Besondere Schwerpunkte sind die jeweiligen Rechtsvorschriften und deren Radikalisierung, die verhandelten Tatbestände, Opfer sowie Täter und deren Motive.
Um die Willkür und Rechtwidrigkeit der Urteile dieser Gerichte zu verdeutlichen soll im vierten Kapitel ein Beispielfall noch einmal gesondert untersucht werden.
Im Letzten Kapitel wird versucht etwas Licht ins Dunkel der Opferzahlen zu bringen.

About the Author
Julia Wood joined the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill when she was 24. During her 37 years on the faculty, she taught classes and conducted research on personal relationships and on gender, communication, and culture. She was named the Lineberger Distinguished Professor of Humanities and the Caroline H. and Thomas S. Royster Distinguished Professor of Graduate Education. She has published 25 books and 100 articles and book chapters. In addition, she has presented more than 100 papers at professional conferences and campuses around the United States. She has received 14 awards honoring her teaching and 16 awards recognizing her scholarship. She received her B.A. from North Carolina State University, her M.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and her Ph.D. from The Pennsylvania State University.

It's a textbook. What do you expect, pull an all nighter like you did with Harry Potter? No, it's pretty boring. But I got an A in the class so I guess I learned something.

This book is essential to anyone who is taking an interpersonal communications course and it is also valuable to anyone whom is not a student and just interested in developing their communication skills. I am a Paralegal Student at Evergreen Valley College and this book was required for a class that I am taking. It is also helpful in my own personal life.

Met all my expectations!

I ordered this book not knowing how the "rented" text books would be like, and I loved it. Its it great condition and the price was awesome. For it originally being $150+, I only had to pay $20 to rent. I'm satisfied!
