religion and intellect together

Fox encourages us to use our minds with our religion. This is a great work. In it's time it must have been quite controversial. Today Conversations with God and An Encounter With A Prophet expand on what Fox had to say in the 1930's. All three books are a must read for independant thinkers.

A long trip back.

I am a recovering alcoholic. A few months back I went on an 8 day cruise to Central America. When the ship left the dock I was seized by a panic, I would be stuck on this ship, away from my support group in no less than a floating bar. I was up most of the first night. The next day I found this book (a friend had loaned it to me) and in desperation I started reading. By the end of the day my panic had passed and I felt closer to God than I had in a long time. I thought I had given up on Jesus many many years ago and that was the attitude I had when I boarded the ship. After reading this book I stepped on to the shore in Miami a Christian again, something I thought was quite impossible. This is a very powerful book. Mr. Fox sweeps away centuries of religious dogma and brings us back to the spiritual principals Jesus actually taught. I have read it several times since my trip. It has done nothing less than revolutionize my whole outlook on life and recovery. The right book at exactly the right time in my life. I pray it will do the same for you.

Essential guide for spiritual progess

Emmet Fox was a philosopher and lecturer in the '30s; this book was read and used by the founders of AA before the Big Book was written. Although Fox writes of what I think of as "absolutes" (you can overcome death, for example) kind of in the style of the Oxford Groups (also popular at that time), I find his approach to the Jesus Christ message full of hope and clear cut examples of how to apply this to your daily life. I cannot recite the Lord's Prayer without thinking of Fox's interpretation. I love this book!!

About the Author

Mark Costanzo received his Ph.D. in social psychology from the University of California at Santa Cruz. He is a professor of psychology at Claremont McKenna College and a member of the plenary faculty at Claremont Graduate University. He has published research on a variety of law-related topics including police interrogations, false confessions, jury decision-making, sexual harassment, attorney argumentation, alternative dispute resolution, and the death penalty. He has also published research in the areas of nonverbal communication, teaching techniques, and energy conservation. Professor Costanzo is author of the books, Just Revenge: Costs and Consequences of the Death Penalty and Psychology Applied to Law. He has co-edited four books, including, Expert Psychological Testimony for the Courts and Violence and the Law.
Professor Costanzo has served as a consultant or expert witness for more than 80 criminal cases. In 2008, he was the winner of the Outstanding Teaching and Mentoring Award from the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues (SPSSI), and in 2010, he received the Outstanding Teaching and Mentoring Award from the American Psychology-Law Society (APLS).

Daniel Krauss completed a joint degree program in psychology and law at the University of Arizona, receiving his J.D. and then his Ph.D. in clinical psychology and psychology, policy, and law. He is a professor at Claremont McKenna College, and is a plenary faculty member at Claremont Graduate University. Professor Krauss is primarily interested in the interaction of law and clinical psychology, and has published a large number of research articles and book chapters relating to clinical psychological evaluations for the courts, legal and psychological expertise, and jury decision-making. He has co-edited 3 books, and is the co-editor of, the law and public policy: psychology and the social sciences book series by the American Psychological Association (APA) Press. Professor Krauss is licensed to practice law in Arizona, is a member of the United States Supreme Court bar, and has served as the United States Supreme Court Fellow to the U.S. Sentencing Commission. He is a licensed clinical psychologist in the state of California, and a diplomate in forensic psychology, board certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology. In 2010, he was awarded the Early Career Research Award by the Western Psychological Association.

Loved this book

Loved this book! It is an extremely interesting book that was hard to put down. Personally I believe it should be a book that all Middle School students should read and then be required reading again in college. Professionals who often forget what tragedies can occur by the misuse of information need a reminder. This book does it with case illustrations that are not drawn out to where you need a degree in law just to understand what is being conveyed. My teenagers have become interested in this book as well. That alone should tell you, it is a book that will capture you, shake your beliefs, and open your eyes! It will stay in my personal library and a discussion in my household.

Not a Psych major but I loved it!!!

I was required to read this book for a class and I can honestly say this is the only textbook I have read start to finish and it held my interest. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a better grasp on psychology, also anyone interested in family law or forensic law. The text is very easy to understand, there are a lot of pictures and diagrams and explanations of key words.

Entertaining and inspiring

This book picks up where "Closer Than Ever" leaves off. And when I say that, I mean RIGHT where "Closer Than Ever" leaves off--like the next weekend. I wouldn't recommend reading it without reading "Closer Than Ever," because I felt like the first book did a lot with character introduction.

Aspects that could be annoying to some people:
- There are a lot of different characters who we see Brianne interact with, and certain relationships seem to change rapidly--but let's face it, at twelve, you see so many different people, and friendships DO change rapidly!
- It's low-level reading, no great vocabulary, not much need for reading-between-the-lines--but that makes it more true to life for a twelve-year-old; some conversations are really simple.
- There's no main conflict that lasts throughout the novel; it's more about the gradual growth of a young girl. So some chapters could seem like they don't contribute to the plot, but still give a glimpse into the character's lives.

Brianne is a mild-mannered twelve-year-old, and we don't see angsty outbursts. She has one or two "girl moments." There's also a nice blend of spiritual growth. I like that these books talk about the everyday struggles of a girl who has committed to living her life by certain standards. You don't see her decisions and convictions tested, but you can see that she's made them. There are also some nice lines that come from Brianne's dad or Austin's dad (both pastors) that strike a chord, and are inspiring even to someone who's not a teenager.

This book (and the others that I've read from "Heaven in My Heart") are short, and cover a very short length of time.

Life in Brianne's world

Brianne, 12, is going to visit Sarah, her friend who has moved away. Silas is moving into where Sarah and her family used to live. Brianne has very supportive parents who converse with her in a mature way. They have talked about not walking or being in a secluded place with a boy. In the beginning of the book Brianne is feeling like a slave though as she is not getting paid to look after her four younger siblings one weekend. Resentment sets in but as she prays about it later, she realizes that she was wrong.

Sarah is having a hard time fitting into her new school. Austin, Joel and Ryan are some of the other boys in this story and they are very respectful of the girls. There are true friendships here depicting how the teenage years should be like. They look out for each other and pray realizing that they can't get through life on their own.

I highly recommend this book for girls. It is gentle, healthy reading where topics are discussed (no sex, just hand holding, kissing, boyfriend, girlfriend). I do suggest reading them in order as there are some thing talked about in here that if you have not read Book 1 (Closer than Ever) will really not make any sense. EXCELLENT example to be setting our girls.
