About the Author
June Drenning Holmquist, head of the Minnesota Historical Society's publishing program from 1956 to 1981 and the first woman to be named an assistant director of the society, served as editor of the Minnesota Ethnic History Project. Oldie but goodie

This is an older copyright, but it is packed with great information about each of dozens of ethnis groups that came to MN. Each section has statictics and a short but informative social history of the group. The articles are easy to read but also profusely footnoted with citations to other great source. An excellant starting point for fun reading leading to further research.

Good info but poor quality

I enjoy reading the data contained in this book but get dismayed when a page falls out onto the floor! Whatever was used to bind the pages to the book is totally unacceptable in this day and age. I rcommend the contents of this book to anyone in Minnesota looking for answers to why our forefathers and mothers came to this state (territory) but buy it in a hardcover book with good binding! Do not buy in the softcover. I had an associate who also bougth this in softcover and it had pages stuck to together due to wet ink or whatever. The old saying of a price to good to be true, applies to this softcover edition.

About the Author
WILLIAM G. CROOK, M.D. received his medical education and training at the University of Virginia, the Pennsylvania Hospital, Vanderbilt and Johns Hopkins. He was a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Allergy and Immunology, the American Academy of Allergy and Alpha Omega Alpha. He is the author of numerous scientific articles and eleven other books. For 15 years he wrote a nationally syndicated newspaper column (General Features and Los Angeles Times Syndicate). Dr. Crook died in 2002.

Better with new revisions!

I bought this book many years ago when Dr. Crook wrote the first edition around 1986. At that time many of the prescriptions for Candida Yeast infections were not available in the US or not invented yet. I recall doing well based on the advice of the book then, but the diet was very difficult to follow. The latest version with updated revisions, includes meal menu items, foods you must avoid at all costs, and ways to test for food allergies that work. I've followed the diet for 8 days thus far and have not only lost 10 lbs, but feel better overall. I haven't obtained a prescription yet from my doctor to kill the yeast, but just the diet alone is helping. I'm sleeping better, up less often during the night, no more itching issues in those places us men aren't supposed to scratch in public. I've learned foods, fruits, and condiments I thought were healthy and good for us, are a major cause aggravating Yeast infection issues. Mine started again along with massive weight gain while starving myself, after a long stay in the VA Hospital and pumped with strong antibiotics via IV's and pills. I lost 67 lbs while sick and started feeling better, but put on 80 lbs in 12 months time due to the yeast issues caused by the antibiotics. No amount of dieting with fresh vegetables, yogurts, fresh fruits, 2% milk even, stopped the weight gain. Literally starving myself still caused weight gains. The book reminded me of the mold and sugars in foods that are okay for people without the yeast problems, can eat without worry. I knew from past experience this diet works, and for me I hope it allows me to avoid Bypass surgery as my last resort option (especially with VA doctors that aren't as professional as private doctors). I highly recommend this book, even if you don't think you have a Yeast infection problem There are simple tests and questions inside designed to help you determine if Yeast is causing your problems in health and/or weight. I am now ordering his Yeast Connection Cookbook. This should be a good companion book if you are considering this one. That (meals I could make) in the past was the difficult part, learning what I could actually have to eat or drink. By the way, I am eating until full, only some cravings that I can now better control, and best of all.....finally losing weight. This will teach you many things about the foods we love that are literally killing us. It is worth the effort and will be not only a life time and lifestyle change, but will make you feel 100% for the first time in years. I've learned to like foods I never would have tried before in my life, even my old cat is healthier and wants the asparagus spears and broccoli I cook in my own herbs grown on the patio.

I started this Yeast Connection Diet on 9/5/2013 and as of 11/1/2013, I have lost 32 lbs so far. This is without any added medications. Blood Pressure, Heart Rate, and Prostate issues have all improved. Overall health and energy level is dramatically improved, plus I have discovered food allergies I never knew about. Most of the recipes are good, some need improvement. The key is, avoid ALL processed foods, including sauces like A1, Mustard, Mayonnaise, etc. You can make your own from scratch knowing exactly what goes into it. As all diets, doing without sugar, salt, etc. is more expensive (my food bill doubled), but this one is well worth it for the benefits for me thus far. As much as I once loved Coca Cola, Domino's Pizza's, fried anything, sweets, etc. Nearly all the foods with sugar or salt added, I can't stand the taste of anymore. Even Kraft American Cheese slices I loved once, are too salty for me now. It is a very time consuming and strict diet, but being retired I have more time for the shopping and preparation now. If you have a busy life, make up your meals and ingredients for a week or so in advance. Make sure to refrigerate or freeze them since they will not have any preservatives (unless you like green or black mold). As you get practice with making condiments and meal items, it gets easier and faster with practice.

For those of you struggling with Yo-Yo diets, or like me, put on weight while counting calories living on 700 per day, weighting portions, counting carbs, etc. that didn't work, and worse, put on the weight anyway. I haven't counted a single calorie or weighed portions since starting this diet. For me it was a waste of time and just didn't work. Things I thought were healthy, were compounding the problem and adding on the weight. This is a lifestyle change, to the point of becoming religious in the proper foods, preparation, and changes you must be committed to. For me seeing positive results and averaging 2 lbs per day lost is what keeps me focused. Yes, I have cheated, then find out one meal of the wrong foods not only causing immediate health issues to return, but sometimes as much as 10 lbs gained overnight after taking two weeks to lose the same amount. As you get more used to eating properly, as I said above, the bad foods will not longer taste as good, or your body will let you know real quick not to eat certain foods you gave up.

I have been consulting with my doctor, and by giving up dairy products, I take vitamin D, Calcium, and other supplements since blood and urine tests showed they dropped. I could literally drink a gallon of milk per day, but found out even 2% milk is loaded with sugar and salt. So thinking fat free milk and the creamer in my coffee was okay, proved to be wrong for me. Any hidden sugars will restrict the weight loss, salt can boost blood pressure. So I can't stress how important reading labels on every food item you buy is very important.

Dated & Repetitive

All the information in here is from 1986 or before except I did notice one from I think 1992. It appears the authors 1st edition is first in the book and rather than revise and update the information the author just added the same information a second time. So as you read the book you get the same information 6+ times.

This should be basic knowledge now with more advanced testing and treatments. If your medical doctor doesn't know it look for a Naturopathic Doctor as they will know all about this and have dozens of dietary, homeopathic, and botanical treatments. I like the topic and think that it was likely an excellent book in the mid 80's. I hope they reorganize the book to eliminate reputation and update the information.

I would recommend getting the The Candida Cure: Yeast, Fungus & Your Health - The 90-Day Program to Beat Candida & Restore Vibrant Health but I would caution that it appears she receives money from the company and supplements she recommends. Outdated Book

This was a good book in it's time, ten to twenty years ago, but the info and advise is very much outdated. Dr Crook was a pioneer in the research on Candida and it's treatments. Some of the advise and recomendations have been proven detrimental to one's total health, such as substituting aspartane or saccharin for sugar. Also, it recommends the use of Nystatin for which you need doctor's prescription. This would require expensive tests before the script could be written. There are new natural ways o dealing with yeast ie diet and supplements.
Am giving it 2 stars because there is good information on the subject of yeast.

I am a contributor to this work by Dr. Polly Myer. This is a must read for women who current, past and future Boeing employees. I experienced this culture first hand. It is a dark side of Boeing that is not known to the public until now. Dr. Myers book is also being used by mental health counselors who have clients that are dealing with the work place trauma induced by this culture

So much information!

Im not a huge BBQ person, I cook my steak restaurant style on the stove. However, my sister was given a smoker, and we have been dying to use it for ribs, and jerky. This book has been a live saver, it really is a step by step easy to follow guide. Everything turned out so well, and tasted amazing. Don't be intimidated, it really is easy to follow for beginners. I knew virtually nothing about smoking, or setting up a bbq for different things. This book is very informative and helpful.

Excellent book for beginners looking to get into smoking!

This is an excellent book for those who want to start cooking real BBQ. It starts off with the basics in explaining the different type of smokers and moves into the regional differences of BBQing. I’m a big fan of Texas style BBQ and I really liked their brisket recipe as well as their Texas style BBQ sauce. I am looking forward to trying out some of the recipes from the “Not Your Everyday BBQ” chapter. As a beginner smoker (but seasoned backyard griller) I highly recommend this book.

LOVE THIS BOOK

I totally feel like I could enter and win one of those BBQ competitions after reading this book. I know about those BBQ competitions because this book tells where they are and how much you can win. Clearly, I have been wasting my time in the kitchen. I need to be outside fiddling with a smoker and signing up to win big money. It has so much information and even some pictures. I liked that it explained the difference between smoking and grilling. Who knew? It gives smoker maintenance which I would have not thought about half of those things. Another wonderful part of this book is it lists different woods and tells what flavors they have for the meat. Again, who knew? I am not one to give books as gifts, but this would be a perfect book to give those newlyweds or a graduate. I did receive this book for free for review purposes.

The Prequel to the First Volume

While the first volume in the series was exclusively about Elric, the second was largely not about Elric at all. The bulk of the stories were devoted to various other incarnations of Moorcock's Eternal Champion and to introducing his multiverse. This third volume returns to the story of Elric. This time he is either avenging himself against the villianous sorcerer Theleb K'aarna in a story which takes place after the fall of Elric's empire, or his Yyrkoon, his usurping brother, in a story which builds up to Elric's exile and revenge.

In this book, we learn a lot more about the nature of Elric's alienation from Melnibonean culture. We learn of his natural bookishness, and his origins as a scholar-king. Melnibone is a fascinating place, where terrible cruelty is justified by the exquisite perfection it achieves, tradition holds the place of morality, and the measure of an emperor's power, prestige and effectiveness is the delight he extracts from his subjects, at whatever cost. In such a world as this, Elric, for all his brooding and rage, also has a conscience. That is enough to make his nature strange to even those close to him.

We also learn of how he recovered the rune swords, and his relationship with The Red Archer.

This volume approaches the joy I felt in reading the first one, where Elric felt like a refreshing antidote to the "pretty," high fantasy of Tolkien, and Conan's jolly, "onward and upward" travels across Hyborea culminating in his becoming king. Elric's story is the story of a downward spiral, terrible, permanent consequences, and his doomed quest for personal peace. If you want more of this, then you'll like this book.

This IMHO is a terrible decision guaranteed to confuse anyone not already familiar with ...

This book contains two novella's The Sleeping Sorceress (The Vanishing Tower) and Elric of Melnibone; these novelella's where written very close in time, but occupy rather distant places in the overall story arc. As the Publisher and Author have for this collection chosen to present the Elric Stories in their order of publication; vs their order in Elrics Story Arc. This IMHO is a terrible decision guaranteed to confuse anyone not already familiar with the Character and Mythos; unfortunately just now this is the only treatment of the Elric stories available for Kindle. btw their proper order is Elric of Melnibone; Sailor on the Seas of Fate, Weird of the White Wolf (The Dreaming City); The Vanishing Tower, Bane of the Black Sword; and Stormbringer. There have of course been several prequels written now; Elric is Michael's most popular character but this is the core material

In Elric of Melnibone we get a wonderful vision of the Dreaming City, Imrryr once the capital of a proud empire now the last vestige of that glory. One does not wish to spoil the books for the reader, but here Michael does a wonderful job of portraying a truly alien culture and people. The citizens of Melnibone are Elegant and Cruel and there is a disturbing Elegance to their Cruelty.

In the Sleeping Sorceress, set after the fall of the Great City, we get a more introspective story; a story that delvs deeper into Elric's Alienation from his own people; and the Empire he was born to rule and doomed to Destroy. The Stories themselves are Good tight, and not at all what one might expect if one is used to so much of Todays Cookie Cutter Fantasy. One can only hope that the "The Elric Saga" will soon be released on Kindle so readers can easily access the stories in their proper order.BB.

Elric's adventures continue

While I love magical mysteries, and have enjoyed Elric's previous adventures, this story seemed a little out of sync for me, maybe I had not read an Elric story in too long a time to pick up on all the nuances, it was enjoyable and a good quick read.
