Based on material from the newly opened Russian archives, this is the first biography of Nicholas Mikhailovich Romanov (1859-1919), the only intellectual in the Russian Imperial Family. This unique study provides insight into the last six decades of tsarist Russia through the experiences of the odd ball member of the clan. An historian and a biologist, the Grand Duke made major contributions in both these fields. A political liberal, he fought tirelessly for reform from within the system. His reformist views made him a pariah within his own family, and contemporary recognition of his accomplishments came more from abroad than at home.

Entering the military, as all Romanovs did, the Grand Duke eventually became hostile toward it and was in fact the only family member ever to formally leave military service. He received honorary doctorates from the Universities of Berlin and Moscow and even won election to the French Academy―one of only two Russians to do so. As the political situation in Russia worsened, he urged the tsar to implement reforms, and he even participated in discussions of a palace coup. Exiled to Vologda after the Communist seizure of power, he was later imprisoned by the police and shot in January 1919.

The biography of a Royal Gentleman Scholar

This is the first full length English biography of Grand Duke Nicholas Mikhailovich Romanov of Russia. The Grand Duke was the eldest of the 6 sons and 1 daughter of Grand Duke Mikhail Nicholaevich and spent most of his youth in the Caucasus where his father was Viceroy.
In later life Nicholas was a well known and respected historian. His works on Russian history and butterflies (both of them passions) are still respected today within in Russia. These interests of Nicholas and his genuine scholarship, along with his love and respect for France and its political systems made him an atypical Romanov.
This is a reasonably detailed and well researched biography that uses primary sources mostly from Russia and France. The author does not hide the Grand Dukes acerbic and cynical nature or try to gloss over his more unattractive traits such as his inability to keep a secret or his anti-Semitism.
However, at the same time the book does not really seem to pinpoint why the Grand Duke was a "Pariah in the Family". The period of Nicholas life during the Russian revolution and the months leading to his death are particularly well documented in some detail, especially in comparison to some of his earlier years.
This book is an important work in filling out the world of the Romanovs and brings to life a Grand Duke, who in most western works, has lived his life in the shadows until now - but who in France and Russia in his day was a celebrity based on ability as much as his imperial birth.

A Detailed, Fascinating Biography

I found this to be a refreshing and absolutely fascinating book about a "minor" member of the Romanov family (because he was intelligent, intellectual and hardworking). I think I have read all the Romanov biographies published in French or English, and I hated for this one to end!
I believe it does depict why Nicholas Mikhailovich was a pariah in the Romanov family, from the "White Crow" title on, although it is helpful if the reader can bring some knowledge to the book (beyond Nicholas and Alexandra), but it isn't essential.
I highly recommend this book to anyone fascinated by European literary and historical culture of the late 19th century, and to anyone whose interest in Imperial Russia goes deeper than wondering if anyone survived the massacre in Ekaterinburg -- this sheds some life on why they ended up there!

A fine book, but -

I would agree with comments above from other reviewers. This provides a very well written and superbly documented perspective on a "new" Romanov. The histories of the tsars can tend to be a bit reptitious.

Disappointment in the Grand Duke or "White Crow": While he is different than others, he is still an Imperial Romanov with all of the accompanying trappings and weight that pulled this house down. The times may be of more far more interest than the life.

Book production shortcomings: If ever a family tree would be useful, it is for this book. And how about a few more photos on quality paper? No dustcover. For the amazingly high price, this is a poorly produced book. Is the demand that low?

A fine book for those with a deep interest in pre-revolutionary Russia. This is not a book, as well done as it is, for the newer student of Russian history.

In the awfully silly I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Pie, children's librarian and author Alison Jackson bypasses pilgrims completely and cuts straight to the stomach of Thanksgiving in America--dinner. A slightly dizzying new spin on the well-loved cumulative rhyming song "I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly," this madcap picture book stars a ravenously hungry relative who comes to Thanksgiving dinner with a pie. Since she eats the pie in its entirety before she even gets in the house, she has to swallow some cider (that "rumbled and mumbled and grumbled inside her"). If you must know, "She swallowed the cider to moisten the pie, / The Thanksgiving pie, which was really too dry, /Perhaps she'll die." The story continues in this vein, as we watch the hosts grow visibly alarmed--and the children visibly delighted-- by the old lady's surreal appetite and supernaturally increasing girth. Illustrator Judith Byron Schachner--creator of the acclaimed Willy and May--has masterfully captured this ludicrous tale in hilariously haywire pen-and-ink drawings, splashed with watercolor. PreSchool-K. In a holiday version of a familiar children's song, an old lady swallows a dry Thanksgiving pie and a succession of other foods, beginning with an entire jug of cider to moisten the pie. Although the cider rumbles and grumbles agreeably inside her, the other foods are not related. The woman swallows a salad to go with a squash, a pot to go with a turkey, and a 10-layer cake to go with the pot. While no one can accuse the original "I Know an Old Lady" of making sense, the animals devoured increase in size each time and fit into a more-or-less logical food chain. Jackson's version is redeemed, however, by the fun of rhymes such as "Her future looked murky, after that turkey" and an ending that shows the old lady as a giant balloon in a Thanksgiving Parade as she finally says, "I'm full." Schachner's watercolor illustrations are absolutely delightful. this book is so much fun! it is very clever...great book to give to a child around thanksgiving time as it talks about all the things that might wind up on your thanksgiving day table...and concludes with the big parade! the illustrations are chaotically fun and colorful and the rhyming is entertaining as the story unfolds. the only reason i'm not giving it five stars is...every page ends with..."Perhaps she'll die!"...which is of course is the way the poem goes. But, i would much preferred the author to say, for example, "She swallowed the cider to moisten the pie, the Thanksgiving pie that was really too dry...WE DON'T KNOW WHY"...instead of "perhaps she'll die".

Other than that...lots of fun!

Great book!

This is a great book. My 3&1/2 year old son loves it. We read a lot of books and this one has already been ready many times. We can pretty much recite the whole thing. Must say though, maybe instead of, "Perhaps she'll die" the author could of used something less grim. I don't mind it but for people who do, just know that "Perhaps she'll die" comes after each and everything she swallows.

I got tired of the "fly" version of this poem decades ago, and the "shell" version and others never really impressed me (I guess I'm tougher to please than I'd have thought...), UNTIL...she decided to swallow the entire Thanksgiving dinner! When I read it, I DON'T just "read" it, but we all SING it together, and the children I teach BEG for it, all autumn long!

The best method to learn a foreign language

English is my second language, and I am not a big fan of leaving feedback, since my English writing is poor. However, I decided to leave this feedback since Living Language really has to be appreciated for their great method of teaching, their great service and their great price that is very affordable. It has been a while that I am trying to learn Italian language, I tried Rosseta Stones, Pimsleur, and also I experienced having a private italian teacher. I am so pleased with the Living Language methods of teaching, and I highly recommended. The CD's guide you step by step through all the exercises in the book, and it explains you all the grammar's exceptional that there are in Italian language. Good luck.

Really good course for learning first-year Italian

This is a really good and thorough course in the language that presents in conversational form all the major concepts: verb tenses (present, past, & future) & moods (indicative, subjunctive, conditional, & imperative), idiomatic phrases, and other grammatical structures. It looks about equal to two college semesters of Italian (maybe three, depending on how different schools structure their language programs; it's essentially first-year Italian). I've been using this course for two weeks now and am halfway through it. I wouldn't recommend this pace, but I mention it so you can interpret what complaints I have in light of it.

This course consists of 3 books: Essential, Intermediate, and Advanced, and includes a blank notebook and 9 audio CD's that correspond to the lessons in the books. There is also an online language lab for quizzing knowledge. The whole course comes in a cardboard slipcase. The lesson books are about the ideal size: lightweight paperbacks, between the size of a trade paperback and an average college textbook; they're big enough to spread out and work with, but small and light enough to use nearly anywhere. The English type is in black, and the Italian in blue, which aids learning. The course is 46 lessons in all, and seems built around language immersion, emphasizing conversational phrases and language that you might use when travelling to/studying in Italy. From this use, of course, you could go anywhere with the language. This course's grammatical explanations are clear and comprehensive, though I might want many more examples to really understand the concepts from a variety of angles and in a variety of situations. (My learning style is more analytical than intuitive, and I don't mind poring over grammar & verb charts to drink in concepts.) This course does a good job of introducing new vocabulary and grammatical concepts "on the fly," by which I mean it throws these things in without formally explaining them beforehand. The reason I find this a good thing is because that's how one would encounter the language in Italy or with a fluent speaker, and this course trains you to be always attentive to new words, phrases, and grammar. I might like a vocab. list at the end of each lesson for new words introduced in that lesson, rather than the glossary for the entire course at the end of each book. But that LL omits vocab. lists does encourage active learning. The notebook that LL provides seems to be for the purpose of writing down new vocab. as one encounters it, and new idiomatic phrases and verb conjugations, etc. The "Unit Essentials" sections in the Intermed. and Adv. books are useful for summarizing key grammatical concepts; likewise the general language summary at the end of each book. I also might like a comprehensive table of contents to help me review what sections of the course I might need to as I use the language once completing the course. The unit outlines along the top of each page are detailed enough for this, but require more flipping through from unit to unit than would a table of contents. Quizzes come about every 4 lessons to reinforce material. They seem a little short for really testing full knowledge, but that they are short and a little easy does keep you moving through the course, rather than getting bogged down on concepts that you will pick up anyway as you keep using the language. LL points out further resources for using the language, such as Italian newspapers and message boards, and one could even find on Youtube Italian news broadcasts and other audio-video resources. I find the online language lab to be moderately useful: I'm glad it's there, but it doesn't clinch my grasp of new concepts. (The book and CD dialogues do that for me.) Some of the games in the language lab seem distracting, like the word search and "pop the bubbles," but they do lighten the mood a bit. The online flashcards and sentence completions are useful exercises beyond the exercises in the books.

Overall, this is a solid course that will teach you Italian. I think the best learning will result from using all the course's materials, as LL suggests, including practicing with the CD recordings, filling up the notebook with vocab., idiomatic expressions, and verb conjugations, and reviewing these regularly. The whole course (Complete Italian) is a good value for the price, though the Essential might not seem so for being so basic. Once I master Italian, I plan to use other Living Language Complete packages to learn other languages.

I was doing pretty well until...

I was impressed by this course until I got to the so called Advanced section. It seems like there's a big chunk missing between the intermediate and the advanced. There are so many words in the quizzes that are new, I thought I missed something. I don't know that a quiz is the place to introduce new vocabulary. I'm constantly switching from Google translate and the course just so I can try to answer the quiz questions. The grammar rules are not explained in enough depth to understand which words to use when. By the 3rd lesson, I was thinking about giving up on it. I guess I'll continue and pick up what I can, but it's gotten pretty frustrating. Also, there isn't much vocabulary so far that I can picture myself using on a trip to Italy.

I've found a few mistakes in the book, so now I don't know if I just don't understand the grammar, or if I've found another mistake.

In spite of what I mentioned above, I still feel the course is better than most. The audio is very clear. I'm a visual learner, so having a book to reference is a big help to me. I have a very difficult time with audio only courses. I gave it 4 stars because of the first two units. I might want to change it to 3 by the time I finish the last one, though.

I purchased this for My wife who works in the biz. Alot of this book is relevant if you want to know who what when why were for some one who has a desire to move up or has started a new position, management, floor on up. For the most part it is based on the way they do things in Vegas. It is a go to book when you have a question for proper procedure, and at the very least enables you to ask an itelligent question about the difference in procedures.
Good book it should be on every casino persons shelf.

About the Author
Aurora P. Realin, MBA, SLP, CDM, was born in the Philippines. She moved with her family to Queens, NY, when Aurora was thirteen years old. In New York, she recalls, I attended public school for the first time in my life. All my life, I had grown up with people who looked and acted like me. I wasn t used to seeing different people from all walks of life. Talk about culture shock! I also noticed that most of the students gravitated toward people of their own kind, or people they liked, and they could be quite unkind to others. Most of them weren't open to other views and ways of life. By contrast, I did my best to make friends with the outcasts, partly because I thought of myself as different, so in essence I felt like we were in the same boat. Even back then I dreamt of a world where differences between people would not be an issue, where everyone - no matter who they were, or where they came from - would all get along, and the word diversity would no longer be an issue because accepting others would just be part of our everyday life. Aurora grew up in a medical family with a physician for a grandfather, a pharmacist for a grandmother, and a brain injury rehab certified registered nurse for a mother. As a result of their experiences, she developed her own passion for helping others from all walks of life, especially within the context of healthcare. She earned a BS in Communicative Disorders (Speech Language Pathology) from the University of Central Florida and an MBA, with emphasis in Healthcare Administration, from Southern Adventist University. She also holds a Certificate in Diversity Management in Healthcare (CDM) from Simmons College. Today, Aurora serves as the Manager for Diversity and Inclusion at Florida Hospital the largest admitting hospital in America where she has worked since 1998. She also serves as the Chairperson for The Beacon Network a community organization whose focus is to promote diversity and inclusion in the Central Florida community, and is also an active board member in both her church and children s school. She is married to Chris, a Police Officer First Class for the City of Orlando, and they have two sons, Christopher and Christian. Her mission in life is to accept, include, and love all people and help them to do the same for each other. She considers it truly a God-given privilege and honor to serve in her current role, which affords her the opportunity to help build relationships and further enhance the concept of inclusion at Florida Hospital and the larger community she serves.

an interesting read

I first acquired this book because it was required reading for a class that I was taking; however as I began to read it I began to realize how applicable it was for my work life. The material is very pertinent and is presented in a manner that is easy to easy to follow and understand. I realized that this book was an excellent quick and easy reference guide for many cultures and major religions. I have actually placed the book in my office so that my nursing team will have access to it when the need arises. I highly recommend this book; it is an easy read and is very insightful.

Not quite complete

The book starts out well. It builds a case for Sentiment trading, and gets you thinking about how it actually works. The author says technical indicators are a general waste of time (However the latter half of the book is devoted to technical indicators - which makes no sense to sentiment trading... further more... the charts used are actually missing the indicators it says should be there.. pages 142-145... blank charts). Then it begins to fall apart after that. The author explains how he uses COT but never actually helps you understand the COT report itself (if you decide to look at it on line). Nor does the author explain how to set it up on your own spread sheet if you wanted to do that. How to exit a trade is so inadequate as well. Then the time devoted to "putting it all together" is one page of summary that doesn't actually tell you how to put a trading system together. Basically it means you still have a lot of work to do to put together a sentiment trading system as this book doesn't help in doing that. It seems the author attacked the subject with vigour to start with then just dropped the ball half way through and padded it out with indicators - which he says are worthless in the first half of the book anyway. I'd give it 2.5 stars out of 5 as the first half of the book is interesting... the second half you can easily replicate from information on-line and is not relevant to sentiment trading.

Absolutely essential in today's market

As a active FX trader and follower of the methods of Larry Williams Jake Bernstein, I found this book essential to developing a workable, scalable and most importantly...profitable trading plan. Backtested and forward tested...in a word, it works! Solid, straightforward writing, examples and formulas. Recommended highly for the experienced trader; newbies probably won't grasp it. It is not a Holy Grail; the methodology requires a good deal of screen time experience and actual manual trading to calibrate the nuances in both calculations and charting. Slog thru it, you will not be sorry! Thank you Jamie!

Very strong tool to consider in your trade decision making process

I am a long time reader of DailyFX site and find it very useful.
One tool that caught my attention some time ago was the COT report column, write by Jamie Saettele.
The book goes further in explain the COT report itself, how to generate indicators from COT data, how to interpret it and, finally, how to use it as a tool to help trigger trades.
Well explained, with plenty of charts, it also has an introduction to Elliot Wave theory, largely used by the author in his tracking of markets.
I recommend the book because of it introduces this subject in a very straight forward way, easy to understand and apply immediately in your trading routine.

He was radically saved out of a life of drug addiction on November 12, 2002. In 2008, he founded Replicate Ministries to educate, equip, and empower believers to make disciples who make disciples (replicate.org). He is the author of Rediscovering Discipleship, Growing Up, Firmly Planted, and Bearing Fruit. Robby and his wife Kandi are the proud parents of two sons, Rig and Ryder.

Four Reasons Why You Should Grab This Book Today...

Don’t hesitate to grab this book! There are several reasons why, but here are my top four…

#1 - Heart matters. Discipleship is a buzzword right now, but Robby out the gate informs his readers that the driving motivation for writing this book is to not raise the banner of discipleship. I appreciate Robby’s heart. Up and above anything Gallaty feels called to cultivate a deeper walk with Jesus. Knowing more about Christ is not true discipleship (information), but rather intimately knowing Jesus more leads to a life of obedience, which is authentic discipleship (imitation). As Robby states: “When a person grows closer to Christ, the yield will be discipleship.” (15) This is a message the church must be reminded of daily, so that we don’t lose an understanding of what biblical discipleship truly is.

#2 - History matters. Gallaty offers us in Rediscovering Discipleship an extensive historical and cultural background of discipleship on Jesus’ terms. We have to begin to “think like a Hebrew,” and then prayerfully consider what the path of discipleship looks like for us today. In addition, Robby surveys many key historical figures (Augustine, Luther, Wesley, etc.) and their approaches to making faithful disciples in their time. His chapter on John Wesley’s discipleship methods is outstanding and will sharpen any church leader or layperson to consider if their model and methods today are effective at making disciples.

#3 - Time Matters. In a McChristian culture where people “want it now,” we have to slow down, and begin to set reasonable goals for spiritual growth. Gallaty provides a realistic tone, pace, and vigor in which discipleship should take place. Robby quotes Richard Foster who says it best: “Our tendency is to overestimate what we can accomplish in 1 year, but underestimate what we can accomplish in 10 years.” (138)

#4 - Metrics Matter. Robby hits the nail on the head with this statement: “the metrics you use to determine success or failure should match the nature of the process and the purpose for which it was designed.” (184) Gallaty provides his metrics (MARCS - missional, accountable, reproducible, communal, and scriptural) to determine if genuine discipleship is happening in the context of his local church. It’s important to remember that metrics are simple tools that help one (in the context of community) tangibly see how they are conforming to the image of Christ. You will be challenged to evaluate if your present metrics are working!

This is a must have book on discipleship by Robby Gallaty. The term "discipleship" has become a buzzword in recent years. It need not be.

Gallaty describes the ultimate end goal of discipleship as "to be conformed into the image of Christ - to talk the way he talked, walk the way he walked, and respond the way he responded" (Gallaty, 2015, p 79). Christian, are you making it your ultimate goal to accomplish this task with your time?

In the foreword, Ed Stetzer calls the reader to reflect on personal engagement by asking: "are we seeking God in prayer, spending time in his Word, and surrounding ourselves with people who will challenge us to grow in our spiritual lives?" (Gallaty, 2015, p. 11). In Rediscovering Discipleship, Gallaty first calls his readers to know Jesus before going on mission, and then outlines a method for making disciples. Stetzer affirms this call to know Jesus by commenting, "Too many of us are so focused on what we're supposed to do for Jesus that we lose focus on Jesus himself" (Gallaty, 2015, p. 12). In fact, Gallaty mentions his purpose for writing the book was as a "clarion call for cultivating a deeper walk with Christ" (Gallaty, 2015, p. 15).

An area of extreme intrigue for this lover of Biblical Hebrew and Discipleship is that his book marries the importance between the two. Gallaty takes the reader through how a Hebrew thinker would have processed the Old Testament and the New Testament and argues that our current interpretation of our purpose in the world has been confused over generations of believers analyzing Scripture from a modern perspective, rather than trying to understand the author's original intent. For me, this area of Rediscovering Discipleship alone makes it worth adding to your library.

Gentlemen, this is a Football!

Another great read from Robby Gallaty. Rediscovering Discipleship, adds to and expounds on "Growing Up" as a staple in your discipleship arsenal. This book provides the next layer of reinforcement to the foundation laid in the previous two books. The great Vince Lombardi used to begin every year's camp by holding up a football and stating, "gentlemen, this is a football." The point was, no matter where you are in your development, the basics are foundational and must be reinforced. If Vince Lombardi were a preacher, this would be his, "this is a football" book.
