Soul mates finding their way...

I started this book without realizing that it was the second in a series. It didn't hurt me, but I'm still going to read the first one and if I had known i definitely would have read it first. I could tell I was missing out on important foundations of relationships that had been established previously.
The book starts with Lauren having professed her love to her friend Matthew, but he hadn't reciprocated the way she had hoped he would. Her boyfriend of 10 years, Eric, had finally proposed to her offering her everything she had always wanted but she realized she didn't want it anymore. She figures out that she's in love with Matthew and doesn't want to marry Eric. Matthew rejected her, Eric is upset and hurt since she turned him down, so she's all alone and trying to figure out what to do with her life. This is where the story begins.

She spends five months picking up the pieces and getting on with daily living on the outside, but her feelings for Matthew don't diminish and the pain is always there. She's in a deep depression but doesn't try to contact Matthew because she thinks it will break her even more to be rejected by him yet again.
I don't want to give this story away, but I will say that I was so frustrated with the both of them! Even though we weren't getting Matthew's POV I was still yelling at him in my head. They just needed to talk to one another! Instead of just assuming they knew exactly what the other was thinking and feeling they should have fought harder for what they wanted. They wasted too much time that could have been spent being happy and together by being alone and in despair. They eventually reconnect but I won't spoil how that occurs for you.

During a conversation about their time apart Matthew said, "The heart is an amazing thing...It never lies, though we may not choose to listen. It continues to beat even when it's broken, even when you wish it wouldn't. It's almost as if it's determined to pull you through the darkest hours, as if it knows that better days are ahead." That line perfectly summarizes in the most profound way the desolation they both lived through.

They end with a definite HEA and seeing how perfect they are together makes all the heartbreak worth it. If events hadn't occurred exactly in the way that they did then maybe they wouldn't have been given this second chance at being with 'the One'. Matthew tells Lauren she's always been his One when he says, "From the moment that I laid eyes on you, I knew you were the one. But for the longest time, you weren't mine to have. ...And you slipped through my fingers and that loss nearly killed me." Swoon!! Every time Matthew says something you just can't help but fall for him a little bit more. He's my new book boyfriend, for sure....and I'm hoping he appears in later books of the series. I can't wait to read them all.

Beautifully Written Romance

Shattered by Alicia Renee Kline is a beautifully written love story, at times it’s gut wrenching, at times happiness pours off the pages. It is the second book in the Intoxicated Book Series and picks up right where book 1 left off. Lauren is devastated with how things have turned out, and she heads back to Eric making her final decision. She does return to Fort Wayne, but is it with a ring on her finger or not? READ ON TO FIND OUT….

Fortunately, readers don’t have to wait long to see what Lauren’s decision is. Without revealing too much, how do her decisions impact her relationship with Blake and most importantly, Matthew? The first part of the book is pretty much just about Lauren and how her choice affects her. She goes through a very emotional, devastating time, and my heart really hurt for her at times. I enjoyed seeing Lauren pick herself up and how she matured through the process. She finally started taking care of herself for a change. As things begin to settle down for her and she is reveling in her new life, a new employee begins working at the bank and changes things. This adds a new, suspenseful twist to the story. I was also glad to see the return of secondary characters, and I did get a glimpse into the pasts of Blake and Chris which has me wanting to see more of their story.

This was a great emotional read which pulled at my heartstrings.

I think that beautiful quote from the book sums up really what the book is about. Ultimately, the heart knows what it wants even though our mind may tell us something different, and the heart isn’t happy until it gets what it wants. Great read, and I can’t wait to read more from Alicia!

Matthew and Lauren’s journey continues in this 2nd book (the 1st is Intoxicated) and as it continues we find that the heart doesn’t always know what is right or wrong but we do find out that our lives do go on and that we take chances in whatever path we so choose to go down. The journey that these two amazing characters take is one that I do say again should be written in the romance history books. The true to life characters of Lauren and Matthew have obstacles that they both need to overcome before finding that their hearts are actually one or are they?

In these pages of this amazing read you will take the journey with me as I did them to find that everyday occurrences are more sacred that the heart does hold dear. Every day is a mystery with Lauren and Matthew but one thing remains the same mystery of the unknown.

Can these two hearts find their way to one another? Can they obtain the love that they truly seek? Can forgiveness of fear of the unknown become the stepping stone to the path of true ever-lasting love?

What I liked about this book is the simplicity. Franco is also Doctor of Chiropractic, so he knows a thing or two about bodybuilding. The fact that he achieved so much without having
any physical advantage proves it.
There are various tried and good programs/split routines for the non-competitive and competitive bodybuilders. Good tips on diet and on common sense healthy living, very actual even though the book was published in '82. Over all the book is pretty complete and is a good example on how they trained in the past.
The only funny thing is that in some routines, unlike Arnold in his Encyclopedia of modern bodybuilding, Franco omits a few power movements which are essential to give the bodybuilder that muscle density. He more than Arnold was famous for his extremely heavy deadlifts.

Along with "Pumping Iron" there are not many "great" books about bodybuilding. This is truly great as well though. Packed with oodles of information upon information from the strongest bodybuilder of all time, and it is the pictures
that are really worth the asking price alone. Franco knows his onions, and the book covers every stage from beginners up to contest standard physiques. Seek out this book!

a unique book

I am a student at Stanford, and I had the pleasure of taking a CS course that used this book.

This is hands down the best introductory text I have come across on quantitative and computational methods for decision making and autonomous planning, with applications ranging from autonomous vehicle control to business decision making.

One reason this book is great is that it covers an incredible breadth of topics - everything from the foundations (decision making formalism, probabilistic modeling, sequential decision making basics) to rather advanced theory (POMDPs, newest advances in reinforcement learning) - without sacrificing the rigor and the depth of coverage. At the same time, the material is presented in a very logical order, which ensures that the new knowledge gradually builds on top of the theoretical foundation. The language of the book is plain, precise, concise and very easy to understand - even to people without advanced math background.

The quality of the math notation is in itself fascinating - the author has gone to great length to ensure all the math is very easy to read and comprehend. Finally, each chapter of the book provides an extensive literature review with up-to-date sources.
My impression is that this book could work well both as an introduction to the decision making methods, and as a review of a particular subfield. I strongly recommend this text.

An excellent overview of decision making theory, covering the basics of probability and probability models, games, Markov decision processes, and partially observable Markov decision processes. The book is well formatted and uses a consistent, clear, and concise mathematical style.
Kochenderfer covers a large variety of methods for tackling decision making problems. Algorithms are clearly outlined and are straightforward to implement on one's own.

This book is overpriced and needs to be a lower cost. I had to buy it for school for my son. His private school requires us to buy our own books and i was super surprised to see how much it costs AND that I got the last book. Not enough copies were printed. Hmmmm.... reason for the high cost???

About the Author
Robert Jurmain received an A.B. in Anthropology from UCLA and a Ph.D. in Biological Anthropology from Harvard. He taught at San Jose State University from 1975 to 2004 and is now professor emeritus. During his teaching career, he taught courses in all major branches of physical anthropology, including osteology and human evolution, with the greatest concentration in general education teaching for introductory students. His research interests are skeletal biology of humans and non-human primates, paleopathology, and paleoanthropology. In addition to his three textbooks, which together have appeared in 30 editions, he is the author of STORIES FROM THE SKELETON: BEHAVIORAL RECONSTRUCTION IN HUMAN OSTEOLOGY (1999, Gordon Breach Publishers), as well as numerous articles in research journals.

Lynn Kilgore earned her Ph.D. from the University of Colorado, Boulder, where she now holds an affiliate faculty position. Her primary research interests are osteology and paleopathology. She has taught numerous undergraduate and graduate courses in human osteology, primate behavior, human heredity and evolution, and general physical anthropology. Her research focuses on developmental defects as well as on disease and trauma in human and great ape skeletons.

Wenda Trevathan is regents' professor (emerita) of anthropology at New Mexico State University, where she taught from 1983 to 2009. She is a biological anthropologist whose research focuses on the evolutionary and biocultural factors underlying human reproduction, including childbirth, maternal behavior, sexuality, and menopause. Her primary publications include works on the evolution of childbirth and evolutionary medicine. Her most recent book is ANCIENT BODIES, MODERN LIVES: HOW EVOLUTION HAS SHAPED WOMEN'S HEALTH (2010, Oxford University Press). She has taught courses in physical anthropology, nutritional anthropology, medical anthropology, evolutionary medicine, and anthropology of reproduction.

Great book

I rented this book from Amazon because it is required reading. Unlike other textbooks I've read this one is written in a clear and engaging manner. Reading the assigned material is enjoyable and not a dreaded chore. The vocabulary words are defined both scientifically and in more common words. The illustrations and graphics accurately fit the material and are clear and understandable. The information is current and reflects the world that we actually live in.

This is the first time I am using Amazon's textbook rental program. I am very impressed so far. The book came in a timely fashion. It was in pristine condition with no marks or highlighter underlining. You can't be a the price anywhere. Believe me I've looked around plenty. I will use the service again.

Chances are, you're looking at this because you need it for a class. You can rest easy, as this book is informative without feeling like a slog to read. Plenty of interesting stuff to read about in here, but your classroom experience will depend more on your teacher than anything else. Still, if you see this title on your reading list, you're probably in good hands.

As far as the actual quality of the book goes, it's also good. The print quality is good, and the writing is concise and clear. That said, I would recommend renting this title if that's an option.

Excellent sports writing.

I'm a basketball fan, an avid reader of sports journalism, and a Filipino. So I had high expectations for this book, and was not disappointed. It manages to be both scholarly and sidesplittingly funny at the same time.

Just like Jack McCallum's "Seven Seconds or Less", the author spends an entire season as an embedded journalist with a local professional ball club. However he alternates his fly-on-the-wall reportage of practices and player hijinks with well-researched chapters on past Pinoy sports heroes, defunct leagues, and the country's culture in general.

I noow realize that it takes an outsider's point of view to really put the bizarre yet wonderful world of Pinoy ball into perspective.

A joy to read

Overtly, this book is two stories spun into a single narrative:

- A general overview of the culture of basketball in the Philippines.
- The story of a single season ("conference") where the author follows a pro basketball team, the Alaska Aces, through their successes and struggles on and off the court.

However, perhaps the most important story in the book is that of a young man experiencing a new culture that he knew very little about before he arrived. The author arrives looking for something familiar, basketball, and through it discovers and attempts to explain much that is unfamiliar. The reader is taken along on this journey as well, and it's a lot of fun.

I myself have been to the Philippines several times, and I picked this book up at an airport bookstore in Manila. Even though I already knew a great deal about the country, I was pleased to learn tons of things that I didn't know before. Filipinos will probably also learn plenty, and even if they don't they will enjoy the author's perspective their culture.

You could undoubtedly write a much more comprehensive book about basketball in the Philippines than this one. The author makes a good effort to research the history of the sport there, but the brevity of his experience limits how much of an insider perspective he could really gain. Furthermore, his account of the present-day league lacks objectivity because he has become very close to the particular team that he covered. However, this does not negatively affect the book at all: it never pretends to give an objective appraisal of the league from a neutral point of view, but rather gives itself wholeheartedly to conveying a fan's sense of love for the game. This love rubs off on you as you read.

This book was a pleasure to read, and I laughed at loud every few pages. I read it mostly in one sitting, on my flight home from the Philippines; for weeks afterward I told everyone I knew about it. I am now passing it around to my friends, and I ordered a copy from Amazon to send to another friend abroad. In terms of sheer enjoyment this was one of the best books I have ever read, especially in the realm of non-fiction.

Long Overdue

Well written. A very good read. This book should have been written long ago. It brought back memories of living, working and playing a whole lot of ball in the Philippines long ago.

The author captures the Filipinos' passion for the National Sport from barrio to big city and provides insight into this often misunderstood country as a Westerner immersed in the culture. Language and cuisine are important.

An Index (Personal Names, at the least) and a Bibliography would have been useful, but that just may be the librarian bias in me.

Some issues, but still liked this book a lot :)

I have been wanting to read this book ever since I read book one, Shipwreck Island, almost a year ago. I really liked the first book. It was exciting and pretty awesome. But also so short, and it ended pretty mean. So I was pretty excited to get this ARC from Macmillan. Had to read it right away. I'm glad I did.

Though I didn't love this book as much as a loved book one, yet I still enjoyed it a whole lot. I just had some issues with the writing this time. Sigh. It felt a bit weird to me. But I still adored the characters and I found the plot to be all kinds of exciting. The cover for both books are all kinds of pretty.

I just. I wish these books had been longer. This one is less than 140 pages. And it is so little. And even with these books being so short, I still have to wait a whole year between them. I don't get that. Publishing is so weird sometimes. Hmph. But even so. I don't really mind waiting. Though I do wish I could read more from this story right away, because oh. Lost ends in such a cliffhanger. Things are not going well for these adorable characters. And I am dying to read more. Fingers crossed that there will be a third book, and I'm hoping it might end up being longer.
