About the Author
Earl Swokowski authored multiple editions of numerous successful textbooks, including CALCULUS; CALCULUS OF A SINGLE VARIABLE; FUNDAMENTALS OF COLLEGE ALGEBRA; and PRECALCULUS: FUNCTIONS AND GRAPHS, all published by Cengage Learning Brooks/Cole.
Jeffery A. Cole has been teaching mathematics and computer science at Anoka-Ramsey Community College since fall 1981. He started working on the Swokowski series of precalculus texts in 1985 as an ancillary author, and has been a co-author since 1991. His contribution to the Swokowski texts also includes joining the revision team of the calculus text in 1989.

Kindle Edition is Useless

I try to buy Kindle editions of my textbooks whenever possible. But the publisher hasn't gone to the trouble to convert the math formulas into graphics - so they don't display on the screen. It didn't matter if I displayed it on my Kindle, or on one of the apps on another device - the problem is in the content.
It's hard to learn math when every "+", "-", "" and "=" sign has been edited out of the book, much less exponents and radicals.
There is a free limited trial of a small section of this book for Kindle. I would recommend downloading it and taking a look (to see if the publisher has fixed these problems) before committing to a purchase.

Worst textbook I've ever used.

When I get stuck on a math problem I'm in the habit of looking back through the lesson for examples or useful information. That method does not work with this book. It presents problems that it hasn't explained how to solve. I am very good at math and very good at using my resources to solve problems. Thank goodness for the internet and my old textbooks, otherwise I would rarely have known what was happening in this class. I realize that maybe (for example) it's using information given in chapter 5 to solve problems in chapter 7. That's unhelpful because most teachers can't fit the entire book in a semester and will skip select chapters. Also, you don't know where to find the information you're looking for when it's not in the chapter that you're studying. A little refresher when it's relevant could be very handy in this book.
A very frustrating thing about this book is all the wrong answers in the back. Our instructor confirmed that there are indeed many wrong answers. His guess was that when they updated from the last edition they changed some problems but failed to change the corresponding solution. It's incredibly frustrating when you're learning and you think you have a correct answer because you followed all the steps and continue to get the same answer but it's different from what the book tells you. You have to ask yourself if you're doing it completely wrong or if the book has yet another incorrect answer.
If you're an instructor who uses this book and your students are struggling more than they should, consider looking for another textbook.

Great textbook and Rigourous Problems

The textbook that is provided by Swokowski and cole present great resources of examples and thorough explination of fundamental concepts. Having this textbook myself, it is composed of challenging problems that will be needed to work out calculus problems. This book has several step by step explanations for some problems, but I think they can add more worked out explanation; however, students shouldn't complain that there is not enough explinations becuase it is a "review" of everything they have learned. That explains the lack worked out problem. Overall, this textbook is really good, and I would recommend it to anyone who wishes to buy. Heck, I even learn on my own just from reading of this textbook.
