In 2006 the program was eventually declassified and the incredible story of America's secret MiGs emerged. For the first time one of the original "Red Eagles" - Col. Gailliard Peck Jr - reveals what it was like to learn to pilot secretly obtained Soviet aircraft, enabling American pilots to train against the hardware they would have to face if the Cold War ever ran hot.
America's Secret MiG Squadron is the story of a group of incredibly brave military pioneers who put their lives on the line to establish a training program that would prepare the US Air Force for a potential Cold War battle with Soviet aircraft. As a F-4 Phantom II piolot in Veitnam, Col. Gail Peck had been shocked by the technicalolgical abilities of the Soviet-built aircraft, and at the poor level of training available to US pilots to aid them in their battles with the Soviet MidGs in the skies over Veitnam. Working with the support of Gen. Hoyt S. Vendenberg, Jr and under conditions of extreme secrecy the CONSTANT PEG program was launched with Peck as the original Red Eagle.
This is the fascinating history of the men who trained to fly and maintain covertly obtained MiGs, which for the first time provids an insiders persepective, personal anecdotes and photographs, revealing how Peck battled bureaucracy and skepticism to ultimately establish the premier fighter pilot training center - the real Top Gun.

About the Author
Col. (Ret.) Gaillard R. Peck, Jr was a career officer in the US Air Force, after graduating from the Air Force Academy in 1962. He served at the Fighter Weapons School as an instructor in the F-4E for more than 2 years, and since May 1998 Peck has served as an F-15C academic instructor at the USAF Weapons School at Nellis Air Force Base. However, he is best known as the creator of the CONSTANT PEG program that trained US airmen against a collection of MiG fighter jets. The author lives in Las Vegas, NV.

Not a well written book

It's difficult to write a negative review for a book like this. The author has accomplished so much and there is so much to admire in his life that it's almost shameful to criticize the way the story is told.
However, this book is a very difficult read. The narrative is often broken when the author spends a few paragraphs talking about the early career of a pilot. After an interesting situation is introduced, pages and pages are dedicated to background information with little relevance.
In the end I skipped much of the book and didn't enjoy it at all.

I was there!

Another truthful and informative book documenting the years we flew MIG's over the Nevada Desert training thousands of Fighter Pilots from the Air Force, Navy and Marines--both active duty and reserves!
I was Bandit 35 and flew 500 MIG-21 sorties in the 70's. Loved every minute and loved these guys. Outstanding follow-on to Steve Davies book! More about the history, how it started and the resulting aerial victories from Desert Storm.

A big disapointment...

I had read Steve Davies' "Red Eagles" when it was published some years ago, and I expected much from Col. Peck's book as it is written by one of the program's insiders.
Contrary to what some reviewers said, what is bothering me is not so much the fact that it looks like a "Reunion book". After all, this is what you can expect from an insider: many little stories about poeple who made it work. The problem comes from the editing and the fact that there is absolutely no guiding line in the tale: we are thrown randomly into different places, different time, different specialties (mechs, pilots, staff...) with many different poeple whose names reappear randomly now and then. So, for someone who was not part of the group, it is impossible to draw a coherent picture of Constant Peg...
I have given it a two stars anyway, because many individual anecdotes are worth reading, but for the story of it, stick to Davies' "Red Eagles".
