Excellent book
By stephanie Fischer
This book is a fascinating read and a prescient view into the future. It offers a new perspective about how to view generations so that individuals, businesses and societies can thrive.
It seems we all hide behind generational fortresses and we use them as an excuse for why we can't communicate across them. The premise of this book is very simple; there was a time when generational barriers made sense—when technology and the tools used to communicate and collaborate were different between different generations—but this is no longer the case. Today, for the most part, we all use the same tools and the same technologies. If that's the case then what function do generational barriers serve? The answer according to Tom and Dan is that they divide us and separate us rather than uniting us. That's something no organization, or society can afford. The authors suggest that we look at deeper behaviors that cross generations, such as; the shift to increasing influence on the part of individuals and small groups; the need to find meaning in our work and in the brands we associate ourselves with; the need to be constantly connected (what the authors call hyper-connected). These are the behaviors of Gen Z that ultimately we will all need to understand and embrace in order to stay in the game.

How come I can't give this six stars?
By Mike Moran
As a Boomer and the father of four Gen Y children, I have in the last few years been struck by how my kids and I have a lot in common about how we use technology and how we think--much more than I did with my own parents. And as someone working in social media and technology, I was struck by how frequently I was being mentored by Gen Xers in the workplace--just as much as I am mentoring younger workers. But I honestly didn't put any of these things together into the bigger picture until I read Gen Z Effect.
As an author myself, I can appreciate not only organizing a big new idea, but also the craftsmanship that went into the writing of this enjoyable page-turner. If you have had trouble piecing together the big trends shaping the new workplace, this is the book for you. In particular, the shift from Affluence to Influence is so well explained that it makes you think about the effect of technology on power in a brand new way. The phrase, "the rich and powerful" is being teased apart as influence is making many people powerful who are in no way rich.
Great ideas, great writing, and just plain riveting. If you miss out on this book, don't blame me.

This excellent, and prescient, look at the not-too-distant future bodes well for how we work and play
By Rick Ladd
One of the early driving forces behind the work of many people in the field of knowledge management, including those who continue struggling to provide, enable, and support efforts at building communities and collaborative environments in organizations, was the recognition of a need to pass on generational knowledge before it was lost to retirement. Tom and Dan's description of the six forces shaping Gen Z, IMO, give us both an indication of how this need is changing and why it is likely to all but disappear soon. By showing the interconnection of various aspects of technology, they weave these developments together into a comprehensive picture of a brighter, more engaging and connected future, where one's age is no longer a major inhibitor to communication.
I had the good fortune to work as an editor with Dan on portions of this book and was immediately impressed with the way he and Tom have pulled together a systemic understanding of the forces behind this evolutionary development. Their combination of experience and expertise has provided the background for recognizing how they are interacting to erase what have previously been major generational differences in accessing the technology that will connect us all and greatly improve how we get things done. I recommend it highly.
